“Whoever has made a voyage up the Hudson must remember the Kaatskill Mountains.”

An American folk tale reborn as a musical. Washington Irving’s timeless story comes alive in Rip Van Winkle: An Original Musical, with book by Mike Clary, music by Frank Cuthbert, and lyrics by Clary & Cuthbert.

The Story

In a Dutch village at the foot of the Catskills, Rip Van Winkle is known more for his easy charm than his hard work.

His wife, Katy, shoulders the family’s burden, while his daughter Judith dreams of a wider world. One day Rip wanders into the mountains, meets the ghostly crew of Henry Hudson, and drinks a magic potion. He wakes twenty years later to find the Revolution has come and gone, his children grown, and the world forever changed.

Blending satire, romance, and myth, the musical reimagines Irving’s legend as a story of family, freedom, and what it means to sleep through history.

This is not just the tale of a man who overslept—it’s about a young nation waking to independence, and the personal cost of choosing escape over responsibility. With humor, heart, and a touch of the supernatural, Rip Van Winkle turns a familiar American myth into a living stage experience.

A blending humor, folklore, and music that captures the spirit of a nation on the edge of transformation.
